The XA(T,H)S 37-97 range of portable air compressors from Atlas Copco is an innovative range of single axle, oil-injected rotary screw compressors.

Powered by a 3-cylinder KUBOTA engine or a 2 or 3-cylinder DEUTZ engine, the Series 7 compressor will provide a reliable source of compressed air to drive various pneumatic tools, including chipping and jackhammers, nut runners, grinders and hammers.

APPLICATION

Atlas Copco compressor helps export Portuguese Pavement tradition

Calçada Portuguesa, the traditional method of paving roads, pavements and large areas in Portuguese cities, towns and villages, is a characteristic of the nation. Many public areas feature intricate designs that reflect both the skill of the "calceteiros" craftsman and local traditions. A number of quarries supply the stone to make and repair these pavements, but due to a variety of factors, local demand is now exceeded by exports.

Laying a new Calçada Portuguesa calls for skill and hard physical work, two factors that have contributed to the steady demise in those practicing this ancient skill in Portugal. Although the techniques have not been lost, most work carried out by modern "calceteiros" craftsmen is for repairs and renovation.

Business for the specialist small quarries in central Portugal that produce the predominantly dark blue and white stone for the pavements, however, remains buoyant. This is thanks to export demand; the distinctive stone remaining highly sort after in markets around the world. Used for both interior and exterior projects, the stone can be relatively easily broken into the 80 x 80mm blocks favoured for traditional work, but it can be easily cut to suit user demand.

These slabs are removed in the quarry using a variety of tools, with the Atlas Copco XAS 97 HardHat powering an Atlas Copco Tex breaker proving among the most popular combinations. “The stone used for pavements can be cut into a wide range of sizes,” says Vasco Simoes of Atlas Copco Portugal. “Smaller 50mm blocks are used for intricate patterns, for example, with larger 150mm blocks for old roads, such as those in Lisbon.

For export to a growing market in China, the quarries tend to produce large blocks which can then be cut to suit local requirements.

As is so often the case, the cost of laying a new calçada has become prohibitively expensive, so the demand for stone to export markets has been good news for the specialist small quarries that remain in business. It is important that the quarries remain open and worked, of course. Without them, the ability to keep the existing pavements in good repair would be impossible.

Series 7 provides a reliable source of compressed air to drive pneumatic tools including chipping hammers, jackhammers, nut runners, grinding tools and rammers. High free air delivery applications, including sandblasting, are also covered. An optional integral 6.5 or 12 kVA generator can be specified to provide additional power for welding, lighting, heating, site equipment and power tools.
